With the internet today everything in the news spreads very fast, whether it be positive or negative. Many businesses are under the spotlight for sending their work overseas to foreign companies that do not take care of their workers. Companies do this to make their products cheaper so they can have a bigger profit margin on their products. The problem with this is many businesses do not look into the conditions of the factories in which they buy products from. Asics has outsourced their labor to other countries, therefore it is their responsibility to make sure these factories that are producing their good are socially responsible. Many businesses once had products produced in countries that did not care about child labor laws, decent wages, or good working conditions. On Asics’ website they say that they have “adopted internal procedures and guidelines with respect to topics covered by the Fundamental Conventions of the ILO” (Asics Corporate, 2014). Some of the topics that fall under these guidelines are child labor and forced labor. Asics seemed to fail in these regard because in 2013 a factory in Bangladesh started on fire, this factory was owned by Monde Apparels (“Wal-Mart”, 2013). Monde Apparels produces products for Wal-Mart, Wrangler, and Asics (“Wal-Mart”, 2013). The major problem Monde, is that this factory had around 30 twelve year olds working for them (“Wal-Mart”, 2013). On top of that thirteen of the fifteen fire extinguishers were not in their assigned spot so no one could try and put the fire out (“Wal-Mart”, 2013). According to the CBS news crew, the highest paid employee at this factory made only 24 cents an hour (“Wal-Mart”, 2013). Workers are also threatened and coached to lie to anyone visiting Monde (“Wal-Mart”, 2013). Clearly this factory in Bangladesh knows that it is not protecting its workers correctly and Asics should investigate which factories they sell their work to a little…show more content…
However some factories do have a union agreement for the times when an incident occurs at a factory (“Asics”, 2013). In Bangladesh there was a roof collapse of a Wing Star factory in which two workers were killed (“Asics”, 2013). Wing Star is one of the factories that has a union agreement, the families of those killed will be compensated and any others injured will also be compensated (“Asics”, 2013). It is good that those affected are being compensated, but the companies who own the buildings should be maintaining the builds to prevent collapses and building fires. Asics is trying to have a positive impact on Bangladesh by giving work to factories that have workers unions, but if workers are still getting killed there are more ways to protect their workers from
