Grammar statement What are the main differences in place of the adverbs in English (when compared to Dutch)? Focus on the adverbs of place and time. Why this needs to be taught Teaching the grammar rule concerning the adverbs of place and time is important for second language learners to understand that there can be grammatical differences between their first language and the English Language. For Dutch learners this can be especially tricky because, although Germanic languages generally adhere to the v2 rule, English is the exception. As a teacher it is important to have full understanding of the grammar rules of both the English and the Dutch language. Therefore, good reference material in both languages is a must! Inductive approach the function of an adverb of place is that it says something about where the action (verb) takes place. Read the following story and answer the questions below. Story can be found in hard copy Question to ask the learners. Read the story again to find the words that indicate time and place. Where in the sentence do you see the adverb of place? Is that at the beginning, the middle, or the end of the sentence? Where in the sentence do you see the adverb of time? How does the place of the adverb of place and time in the sentence, compare to the Dutch? We (Esther and Marco) prefer both the deductive and inductive approach. Because, although the rules are important to know, not all learners are able to remember the theory without the practice. The deductive approach gives the learner the rule, but the inductive approach makes the learners use their brains to discover the patterns which tell the learners what the rules are, and this makes it easier to remember the rules and how to apply
