The film 1408 takes place in modern times and follows Mike Enslin, who is an author/ghost hunter. Mike seeks haunted venues throughout the world in order to write his books, which are basically top ten rankings of the places he visits, such as “Top Ten Haunted Lighthouses”. Typically, Mike has found very little success when visiting these different “haunted” venues, which has led to his disbelief in ghosts. However, he eventually receives a letter in the mail suggesting that he visits room 1408 of the Dolphin hotel in New York. After doing some research, Mike discovers there have been several deaths in this hotel room ranging from a wide variety of causes. Intrigued, Mike calls to make a reservation with the hotel. In fact, God plays a significant role in this film. Earlier in Mike’s life, he loses his daughter Katie to a severe illness (this is one of the hallucinations that 1408 makes Mike relive). Because of this, Mike loses his faith in God and states “what kind of God would do this to a little girl?” Later on in the movie, he again shows his lack of faith in God when he mentions “there is no god to protect us from ghosts.” This raises the question as to whether or not he was potentially being punished harder for his disbelief in…show more content…
Mike had several hallucinations of Katie while he was in room 1408. He relived the moment in the hospital when Katie could overhear Mike and Lilly’s conversation, which displayed their lack of faith in her survival. Mike didn’t know she had heard that conversation until the hallucination. After this scene, the walls start bleeding; this is either a possible representation of Katie’s blood or her death in general. She makes another appearance later in the movie when the room is destroyed. She asks Mike if he even loves her anymore and he takes her in his arms and says they will be together forever. Unfortunately, Katie dies in his arms and she is once again taken from Mike, which was the turning point for Mike’s faith that he would beat the
