In the late second century, Rome was the world’s number one power house. Its fall was the result of severe government corruption, too much military spending for wars, and overexpansion. Due to Rome’s extremely large size, it was not easy to control the entire region in a consistent and effective way. Also, being the empire of Rome was not an easy job. It was full of danger and being murdered was practically almost inevitable. When entering the civil war, Rome was thrown into a bunch of chaos and more than twenty men were able to fill the position of the empire within a span of only seventy five years, this was usually due to their predecessors being assassinated. They began becoming corrupt and their morals disintegrated into nothing. Some of the wrongs that they committed included adultery, incest and rape of young boys (for example: Tiberius was known to keep groups of young boys for his own sexual desires and pleasure), bestiality, and cruelty towards the lower classes. With this corruption, the people of Rome began to realize what was happening and they became angry with their government system and began rebelling against the Emperors. The problem that Rome had of overspending on their military and engaging in countless wars has also helped their decline. The city of Rome was in constant warfare which required for military spending to be increased. The army became so large that they were desperate for more people to join in order to keep ensure that the military stayed strong. This was a problem though when they had captured the Barbarians and then allowed them to join their army. The Barbarians that were serving time in the army were able to gain insight and knowledge about the Roman’s motives and future expansion plans; this was a major problem because eventually these Barbarians were able to turn against the Romans and use this information they have acquired for their own…show more content…
You may say that Rome as a political entity fell, but the Roman legacy lives on to this day and can be seen all around the world. After the Western Roman Empire fell, the Eastern part of the empire continued to run for almost 1,000 years afterwards. The political aspect of having one empire to rule everything lasted up until around the 17th century when the Reformation threw this out of the water and made it seem unrealistic. Although this collapse of the political system was imminent, we to this day have kept and utilized many ideals that the Romans have started. For example, what seems to have made the biggest impact is Rome’s architecture. Roman style architecture can be seen today in the form of columns, pillars, and domes. The greatest example of this in the United States would be the White House and the Lincoln Memorial. As well as these important Roman inspired government buildings, we have our beloved sports stadiums which are also based off of the Roman models. For ages, several countries continued to use the Roman system of measurement, and to this day, the United States has still managed to keep this system.
