Why did the Roman Empire decline and fall in Western Europe? The Roman Empire was one of the most powerful and vast empires that the world had ever seen. Starting out from small humble beginnings, it set out to bring nearly the whole inhabited world under its rule. Rome at its height was the capital of the world, however even the mighty empire came to its demise. As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in one day, the decline of Rome also didn’t happen overnight. There were many underlying economic and social causes that negatively affected Rome, and in end result, the approximately 500-year-old empire collapsed. Rome’s primary cause for it’s fall was definitely was its failing economy, there were of course many reasons for this. At this time, the Western Empire was based around Rome and Diocletian was at the helm of the Eastern Empire at Constantinople, modern Istanbul. Both empires were much different than the other. For example, the Western Empire was spoke mostly Latin, and the Eastern Empire spoke mainly Greek. Although this division was in good faith and in an attempt to strengthen both empires, the split ultimately lead to drive a wedge between the two empires and also weakened their communication. Also this resulted in vulnerability for both empires during the invasions of the barbarians, and more so for the Western Empire. In an effort to protect the Empires, they had to spend money they didn’t have for these military defenses. To pay for these, taxes were increased and extra coins were minted. This lead to inflation causing prices to rise, adding to the economic crisis. Therefore, the people of Rome were less than favorable towards those who led them. (History Learning
