Introduction Where The Wild Things Are is a book about a boy named Max. Max is introduced as a child who is dressed in a wolf outfit creating mischief. Max is building a fort out of a blanket, tacking it to the wall in two places. He also is chasing the dog with a fork. His mother called him wild and Max barks back, “I’ll eat you up”. Max is sent to his room without supper because of his behavior. As the story continues, Max’s room begins to grow into a forest. The forest grew until Max’s room changed into a whole new world. An ocean is created and Max sails away to another land. The book says that it was almost a year before Max finds the land Where The Wild Things Are. The author now explains how terrible the things are in the new setting. Max has the ability to control the monsters and calm them with a magic trick. The terrible monsters were all scared of Max and called him the most wild of all things. He is then crowned the king of all the land. Max commands all the wild things to start what he calls a “rumpus”. The author doesn’t narrate this section of the book. Maurice Sendak uses a wide-format soft cover book that is pleasing to the eye. The technique of starting where you finish is a style which appeals to many readers. The subject matter is simplistic and enjoyable format that stimulates the reader’s imagination. The cartoon style used in the book was spot on for students of any age. I even enjoy the pictures and the plot. I believe this was a good choice because it’s unique and imaginative. Maurice Sendak uses a style called cross-hatching/cartoon to create a visual appealing picture that catches the eye of the reader. I believe this style appeals to children because it is pleasing to the eye and correlates to the story in a unique
