American Definition Essay What does it mean to be American? Immigrants from all over the world traveled here to live a new and better life. Why? The American Identity is unique to America in that, American citizens have pride in their country, have a spirit of perseverance to make a new life, and have the ability to find their own identity. First of all, loyalty is something that many people are proud to have. Being an American is something immigrants wanted to have and be proud of. Saying the Pledge of Allegiance every day is an example of loyalty to American citizens. In 1971, current U.S. Senate member John McCain was imprisoned in a Vietnamese war camp. In the camp, he had a friend that was also a prisoner named Mike Christian. During the time at camp, Mike received items he used to sew an American flag into the underside of his shirt. Those seeking a new life in America were forced to work for their dreams and successful life. Though this seems difficult, many took the challenge because they knew it would mean a better life for themselves and their families. In the story we read by Anzia Yezierska called “America and I,” we learn that she was not expecting the challenge of working for her dreams. Anzia was expecting to be handed the American Dream. By the end of the story, she had a revelation. She says, “Fired up by this revealing light, I began to build a bridge of understanding between the American-born and myself” (Yezierska 16-23). Immigrants seeking a new life expected something different from the reality of America. They expected to be automatically accepted and successful. They were sadly mistaken.
