Marc Mauer explains to his audience the impact of current incarceration policies and the effects of those current policies in his 2004 article, “LESSONS FROM THE ‘GET TOUGH’ MOVEMENT IN THE UNITED STATES.” Before going into the six areas that are affected, he introduces statistical information from 1972 to present (2004), showing increase in prison population and crime rate.
