Advertisements run our society. Ads are practically everywhere we look nowadays that we are “exposed to over 2000 ads a day,” mentioned by Jean Kilbourne of CML. We have become so accustomed to these images that it takes more than just a simple ad to grab our attention. To think that advertisers sneak in pieces of Americans’ obsessions in all ads, is clever and without realizing this, consumers are easily swindled into their products and other cultural preferences. We think one thing about an ad but in reality, is there something else it could be saying? Personally, I have never realized the manipulative techniques advertisers use until now. The ad models ten gorgeous women lined up in a playful way that shows off their bra and bodies. Everyone in the ad is thin, skinny with some racial diversity between them. The brand name is in the middle where it is obvious and noticeable. Also, there is the phrase, “Perfect Fit. Perfect Comfort. Perfectly Soft.” in a smaller font below the brand line name. Our culture has ingrained in most that being alone is not normal. If you’re not apart of a group, you are frowned upon or looked at in a strange way. We feel the need to fit in society, because we do not want to be shunned. So Victoria’s Secret advertiser use this technique to gain a hold on consumers. This can be seen through the ad, because there is no dramatic difference between skin tones of the women in this ads. There is not one women that is significantly darker or lighter than the others. The skin tones were probably photo shopped to look more neutral between each other. The body types are all the same as well, which not only shows the ideal body for society but also, that they are all one and part of a group. Our society is so scared of this reality that it has affected our personal relationships with our significant other. According to CBS News, “ researchers discovered that both men and women were so scared to be single that they were willing to stay in unfulfilling relationships, and people who had fears of being alone were less likely to get out of a bad relationship.” People are now staying with partners that are clearly not right for them based on the fear of being alone.
