Hunter Phipps In the 1988 film, "They Live", directed by John Carpenter, the ideology is a main undertone of the movie. I will argue that this movie shows how the ideology of social norms affect's our perception of society. The movie shows wealth's power, and that people will ignore the bad things in the world for money. Ideology is the set of beliefs in a society. Ideology functions when people commit to a set of beliefs held by a society. Those set of beliefs are held even when the environment the person was in has changed. This movie shows the effect ideology can have on a group of people. In the movie, the aliens would make people rich in return for their support in taking over earth. Education allows one to overcome the societal norms and see what really happens in the world. Without education people become followers and don't make their own ideas. This has shown to be a dangerous thing in the world when bad people come to power because of the uneducated people in the world. In our society, people tend to conform to common systems of ideas. However when individuals come to understand and interpret reality in their own unique perspectives they will go against the norms of society that oppress people. The movie they live is a prime portrayal of this, where once people put on the glasses and saw the subliminal messages and aliens controlling them they started fighting back. The glasses showed people that advertisements is used as propaganda to have people conform to society. The sunglasses change the advertisements from happy messages to dark propaganda, secretly showing there hidden messages. The aliens also control all the news stations and use them to transmit propaganda and use it to put out a signal that disguises the aliens as humans. The news station is used to keep people in line and following
