The two major issues highlighted in chapter 9 that are present in the film "The Visitor" ,is illegal immigration and U.S. policies for illegal aliens. In chapter 9, the author speaks about illegal immigration and defines it as people entering the U.S. either illegally or legally and have remained in the country past their time limit. Illegal immigration is present in the feature film "The Visitor", when the viewer learns that Tarek came into the U.S. legally, however, after being denied asylum, was sent a bag and baggage letter advising him to appear to court for deportation. In my opinion, with the presence of illegal immigration in the movie and in the book to me it hinted on patriotism. I say this because in the movie I noticed a billboard…show more content…
In the book," Understanding Social Problems", the author begins to state policies such as:The 1986 Immigration Reform and Control Act, The Secure Fence Act, and the Dream Act" (Mooney). These policies cover major topics from punishment for hiring illegal immigrants to introducing a way for illegal immigrants to obtain an education. However, in the movie the policies that are demonstrated have little to do with the illegal hiring of immigrants or education, but it involved the deportation processes for those that do not belong. As stated in the movie, " the governments approach has changed its very black and white its either you belong or you don't". In short words, their is no grey area for those that come into the country illegally and they must leave their families and new life's behind. in the book and in the film, I realized that they both have a similar message written through posters and pictures. In chapter 9, their is a picture that demonstrates a protest that consisted of many immigrants holding up posters that said ''We Are America". However, what I find amusing about this image is that it is very similar to the poster in the film " the visitor" that read," the strength of America is in its immigrants". In my opinion, the posting of these posters demonstrates the contrary of what was being done in the facility by
