The Sound Engineer 1.INTRODUCTION The following text is from “The sound engineer” that was written by James G. Skakoon. It will talk about that Tufts University’s students tried to use different knowledge to make their own instruments. From the article, there will be some advantages of the different way of new teaching. It not only teaches engineering, but also some other subjects that may have no obvious connection with what they will put into use. In many people’s opinion, the students who study engineering usually do not like art and music, but this is an obvious mistake. Besides, creating a unique instrument is very cool. Just think about the situation that you are sitting in the centre of people, playing your own instrument, with hundreds of eyes watching. Nothing can be cooler than this. What is more, the way of teaching is also cool. You can not only learn physics and math, but also music. It is such a good multidisciplinary course. I hold a belief that students who go through the education like this can develop more comprehensively because they touch many differentaspects that others do not go through. In this age, everyone wants to create, but if you do not have enough knowledge and a good field of vision, you will not succeed, at least, you will not gain success all the time. “The class did gain a new understanding and appreciation of the musical instrument they played growing up –and of the many ways to make music” [1]. It really works. Only by practicing can students learn better and deeper. For students this can broaden their horizons and make them more creative and imaginative. “The physics students was always modeling the air flows and I was thinking about how economics—how the user would play it” [2]. Multidisciplinary teaching is really effective and interesting. During the courses, students faced some troubles that they may not have before. Though the work is not perfect, the most important thing is the process. Students can find the there is something that does not fit the theory, this can develop the ability of exploring and questioning.
