I may be a boy, but that is not an excuse to ignore problems that are very much there in society. For a very long time, women have been oppressed. They were meant to stay at home; they were not allowed to vote. Eventually, women grew tired of the treatment and made change happen. The 19th amendment was passed and women joined the workforce. But even after joining the workforce, women are treated differently in the workplace, and that difference is shown through their paychecks. Equal pay will benefit many people and the economy as well. . The Wage Gap puts a lot of women at a disadvantage. It even puts future generations at a disadvantage. The Wage Gap is inequitable because of other things women undergo for the majority of their lives. Women menstruate and have to spend more money to pay for feminine hygiene products; things men do not have to worry about. For most women they are a necessity and others a luxury they cannot afford. The price of how much a menstrual cycle can cost women was done, “1 tampon every 6 hours is equal to 4 tampons per day times 5 days of a period times 20 tampons per cycle times 456 periods are equal to 9,120 tampons. At 36 tampons per box, that’s 253.3 boxes x $7 = $1,773.33” (Kane 1) This shows that women have more expenses exclusive to their gender, without enough money to spend this is another burden on women. They would rather put their money to use and put it towards other things like having clothes and food for their children, but they also want to take care of their hygiene. The Wage Gap diminishes the amount of money they could have and with these extra expenses they have even less money to use afterwards. Single mothers are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to income, many are living in rough conditions. Men have always had an advantage and a smaller amount of single fathers live in poverty, which is not good, but it shows how many women are put in critical conditions and the Wage Gap plays a big part in it. Equal Pay Day was started to show just how big the divide is between men and women. A finding made after the Equal Pay Day passed was “If the gap were closed, California women could afford food for more than one year.”(California’s Gender Wage Gap 1) This exhibits how women, especially single mothers are hampered by the Wage Gap. With the Wage Gap closing women would find it easier to provide for themselves and if they have children, for their families as well.
