Organizations, like Monsanto, that provide technology that improves human lives have a moral obligation to society (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Monsanto can best fulfill their moral obligation while protecting society and the environment from potential negative consequences of their product by using the dimensions of social responsibility (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). The dimensions of social responsibility include economic and legal responsibility, ethical responsibility, and Philanthropic responsibility (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). The economic responsibility of making a profit serves employees and the community at large (Ferrell & Haertline, 2014). The basic principles have been codified as laws and regulations to induce marketers to conform to society’s expectations of conduct (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). However, it is important to understand that marketing ethics goes beyond legal issues (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Ethical marketing decisions foster trust, which helps build long-term relationships (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Marketing ethics includes decisions about what is right or wrong with the organizations context in planning and implementation (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Marketers are often asked by organizations to help make the numbers by reaching almost impossible sales targets (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). In fact, most marketing misconduct is done to help the organization (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Bending the rules can lead to an employee receiving a promotion or destroying an employees career (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). There is evidence to show that ignoring ethical issues can destroy stakeholder trust and prompt a government investigation (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014). Organizations that engage in activities that deviate from accepted principles to further their interests, marketing exchanges become more difficult, even impossible (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014).
