ACTION RESEARCH: THE USE OF AUTHENTIC MATERIALS IN READING CLASS FOR SECOND-YEAR STUDENTS MAJORING IN ENGLISH AT HUE UNIVERSITY – COLLEGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES I. INTRODUCTION 1. First, Essberger (2010) noted that reading stimulates learning vocabulary in context. Second, it may give you a model of writing as texts you read show you structures together with useful expressions you can use when writing. Third, you could see “correctly structured” English thanks to reading. In other words, people usually use "correct" English with a proper grammatical structure when they write, therefore, by reading you see and learn grammatical English naturally. Moreover, Anand (2014) also mentioned the other four benefits of reading. That is to help articulate thoughts as reading enriches the vocabulary and improves you a more creative thinker. In addition, reading enhances problem-solving skills as well as increases concentration. Last but not least, reading helps improve memory. Nonetheless, sometimes, they seem not interesting enough to stimulate students to read. As a result, authentic materials such as newspapers, magazines, poems or brochures tend to be suggested to use as other sources of reading texts in order to alter some unexciting topics in the course books. The information from these sources consists of a wide range of topics, for example, entertainment, science, technology, fashion, sports, and movies, which are suitable for intermediate to advanced learners. What is more, ample researchers stated that using authentic materials particularly in teaching language in classrooms has been effective during the past decades. Most of them believe this kind of materials help increase the learners’ motivation towards reading (Azri & Rashdi, 2014). Despite benefits of authentic materials, lots of teachers in Vietnam, particularly Hue City, have not exploited them in teaching English. Consequently, it is vital to carry out a research related to exploiting authentic materials in teaching, especially teaching reading. Based on the hypothesis mentioned above, I made a decision to carry out the action research named “The Use of Authentic Materials in Reading Class for Second-Year Students Majoring in English at Hue University – College Of Foreign Languages”.
