Lois Lowry’s dystopian novel, The Giver, takes place on the future where people live in harmony. Jonas, who is the new Receiver of Memory, starts to get memories of the past from The Giver. The Giver gives Jonas memories of colors, warfare, weather, pain and many others. Jonas gets frightened when The Giver gives him painful memories of the past. Jonas gets to know the truth that his community needs to learn a lot more; they have to feel the feelings, and the real pain.The novel shows how Jonas used the memories to make Gabriel and himself sleep, feel comfortable, and not to get caught, and memories can help people change the world, and why memories are noteworthy in human life. One lesson the novel suggest is that memories play an imperative role in human life. In the novel, The Giver, memories are a source of wisdom, but also of pain. When Jonas, left the colony, he used his memories to make Gabriel and himself sleep, and manage not to get caught when the planes use to fly over them. “He cuddled Gabriel’s small body close to him, and rubbed his little back. Then he pressed his hands firmly and transmitted a memory of deep, contented exhaustion. Gabriel’s head nodded, after sometime, he fell against Jonas’s chest (Lowry 157)”. This text from the novel shows that Jonas used the memory of exhaustion, to help Gabriel sleep, and made their bodies cool down. It helped them to avoid the searchers to fly over them. Another detail that shows how memories can make people calm down and feel comfortable is when, “Jonas pressed his hands into Gabriel’s back and tried to remember the memory of sunshine (Lowry 165)”. This text shows that Jonas hold on to the memory of sunshine to warm himself and Gabriel form the cold, this made them feel good and calm in the harsh cold
