Rough Draft on The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian Webster’s Dictionary defines perseverance as a continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. Junior is a hopeful boy that lives on a small low class reservation in a town called Spokane. He struggles to find his way fitting in at school, friends, and even a home sometimes. His his life changes when he decides to leave the reservation and attend an all white school. First, Junior shows his hope through drawing cartoons to express his thoughts and feelings. I the beginning of the book Junior says: ” I think the world is a series of broken dams and floods and my cartoons are tiny little life boats” (p6). Junior knows that he can’t change his life on the reservation and enjoys drawing cartoons to escape into his own world of thoughts. Junior draws because he wants people care about him, like he could grow up and become someone important and famous. He feels like he needs to communicate to the world through his ideas and drawings. Next, after his talk with his geometry teacher Mr. P, Junior decides to go to Reardon. He tells his parents, ‘’“I want to go to Reardon,’’ I couldn’t believe what I was saying, for me it seemed as real as saying “I want to fly to the moon.”” Even though it was difficult for Junior to leave the reservation with all his friends and traditions behind. Junior wanted to start a new journey that would allow him to exceed his dreams and hopes of someday becoming that someone he always wanted to be.
