The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian Analysis Do you think pictures can alter what you think about a book’s meaning? I think the presence of pictures alters The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian in the best way possible. The illustrations Junior draws can explain what words simply can’t. Sherman Alexie adds the drawings to show the way Junior uses them to escape his bad life on the reservation, illustrations can show what events happened. Alexie uses illustrations to show how the characters are feeling and why they feel that way. Pictures can also show what characters look like and what they are wearing. Junior doesn't just draw to help himself escape his bad life on the reservation, he also draws to help his best friend, Rowdy, find a sort of way to escape his bad life at home. One illustration shows that during school, Junior finds his mother’s name in his geometry book. He gets so angry about it that he throws the book at his teacher, Mr. P’s head. When Junior tells rowdy he is transferring to Reardan, the illustration shows Rowdy is very mad and slightly emotional, so he takes his anger out on Junior by beating him. Junior also draws one of his teachers while the teacher is mad, comparing him to a volcano.
