The Battle of Stalingrad is said to be one of the most important battles and turning points in the whole World War II. This battle sets a clear difference in the before and the after of the war. This battle was fought between Germany and the Soviet Union. Many things were factors in this battle. The stage the war was at, the stage of each country and how they viewed the war at the time and many more. However, how did winning the battle of Stalingrad change the outcome of the war from the Soviets and Germans perspective? By 1942, the German operation called Barbarossa had failed. General Zhukov was a Russian commander. He led to the strategically decisive Battle of Khalkhin Gol. This was a very important battle for this commander because he ended up having the victory and was also declared a Hero of the Soviet Union. He was part of a development of a plan that had as an objective to prevent for an attack by the Germans. He had involvement in this plan, making him a very important part of the war. But now, how did the actual battle go? On September 3, 1942, the German Sixth Army under Paulus reached Stalingrad, expecting to take the city in short order. But the Russians had built up their defenses and continued to bring in reinforcements Marshal Zhukov, Soviet Russia’s greatest general, planned a counteroffensive. By late September the Germans could raise the swastika flag in the center of town, but they could not dislodge the Russians from the sprawling industrial quarters along the Volga. In mid-November, as the stalled invaders were running short of men and munitions, Zhukov launched his counteroffensive to encircle the enemy. At this point the Germans probably could have fought their way out, but Hitler would not allow them to: they were ordered to hold their ground at all
