Things Fall Apart Outline I. Introduction (theme) – the theme in things fall apart is hoping to not be someone else. a. Who – The tribe of the Igbo people (Umuafu) i. Okonkwo b. What – Okonkwo fears that he will become like his father. He is a respected leader and his dad is known for being lazy and a coward. Okonkwo successfully becomes a great wrestler and a hard worker. c. When – During the Umuafu tribe time period d. Where – Africa e. Why – Everyone thought low of his father and he didn’t want people thinking he was like him. f. How – Okonkwo does this by doing the exact opposite things his father did. He tried to not be like him. II. Okonkwo adopts a boy from another village named Ikemefuna. Okonkwo ends up loving him like a son. He actually ends up loving him more than his own real son named Nwoye. III.…show more content…
Three years later the tribe decides his adopted son, Ikemefuna must die. The men of the tribe take him into the forest to murder him. Okonkwo actually helps with the murder! Even though Okonkwo just killed his adopted son, he shows no emotions because he wants to be seen as a tough guy and not look weak like his own father. Inside he actually feels so much guilt and remorse. But since he was so focused on being tough, he isolates himself from his real son Nwoye, who was like a true brother to Ikemefuna. IV. Later in the future Okonkwo accidentally shoots and kills a boy. This crime causes the town to exile him for seven years to his mom’s homeland, Mbanta. When he is there he learns about the coming of the “white missionaries” which means the beginning to the end of the Igbo people. They bring the religion of Christianity and start getting their first converters from Igbo outcasts. As soon as Okonkwo finishes his seven year sentence and is finally able to go home, his real son Nwoye converts to Christianity. For this Okonkwo disowns his own
