Civil liberties and civil rights are fundamental for our everyday lives. Civil liberties are our natural rights, such as freedom, equality and the pursuit of happiness, which the government cannot change by making new laws. In today’s society both of these terms have a different approach. Civil rights are considered to be our natural rights. Civil rights means that people have the right to be treated the same regardless of their race, gender, or religion. Although civil rights are supposed to be guaranteed by law, this took many years to be accomplished. For example, after the Civil War African Americans were still treated poorly, they were given the worst jobs and were paid poorly. The first ten amendments are crucial for all American citizens. The Civil rights has the equal protection clause on their side. The equal protection clause is important because it’s a guarantee that our government will treat the people in society equally. Civil liberties add to the protection guaranteed by the constitution of our personal choices such as the right to privacy right to a jury trial, right to freedom of religion, right to freedom of speech, right to bear arms, right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures of your property, right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment, right to vote and many more. The civil liberty gives us the freedom of assembly but with limits. The fourteenth amendment gave black Americans citizenship and granted due process under the law. Along with this movement, there was the Brown vs. Board of Education ruling for school integration and rejecting the separate but equal clause. Roe v. Wade was another ruling that gave woman the right to an abortion. There’s also The Americans with Disabilities Act that was passed to ensure that those with mental or physical disabilities are not denied the protection of the Civil Rights. In the case of Tennessee vs. Lane, the courts ruled that if a court was inaccessible to a disabled person that person was allowed to sue the courts. Employers also needed to change the work place to accommodate those with disabilities.
