Social Inequality Stuff It is something that everyone has heard of, whether it was from a guidance counselor, a civil rights activist, or a world leader. Social inequality has existed for thousands of years, yet not enough attention is brought to it. Social inequality impacts everyone throughout the world, from teenagers in America to the authors who bring awareness to it. Much effort has been exerted into this problem, and there is loads of information about it. There is a frightening amount of social inequality in this world, and many of its forms are affecting teenagers in modern America. For example, there is religious liberty, which America was supposedly founded upon. This does not pertain to just one religion; it affects all religions.…show more content…
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare addresses this, and even though it is set several hundred years ago, the same thames pertain to modern teenagers. On page 17, Kit Tyler, the main character of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, is accused of witchcraft because she can swim. Kit was raised on an island and is a member of the Church of England. The woman who accused her of witchcraft is a member of the Puritan Church. Since the Puritans apparently forbid swimming, they are offended by her more free ways, even though her religion does not forbid it. Another example of social inequity is when Hannah relates to Kit her fear of being unwelcome at the at the Puriyan Meeting, since Hannah is a Quaker . Hannah must pay a fine because she does not go to the Meeting.( Speare, Page 98.) However, this is not just a problem of the 1600s. People are still discriminated for their religion, such as the Christian woman who was thrown into jail because she could not sign a marriage certificate for a homosexual couple. This does not only affect Christians, but it also affects Muslims and Hasidic Jews, as well as anyone who does not support same sex…show more content…
The disabled are only disabled because our culture views them that way, and two Federal laws that prevent bullying against disabled persons are Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Additionally, because of the way that they are bullied, autistic youth have lately caught the nation’s attention. “Three decades have passed since federal law mandated inclusion — ending, officially at least, a system that segregated students with disabilities from the rest of the student population.” ( Camille.) Average students are still developing empathetic and social skills, thus some researchers think that students should be integrated with other schoolchildren with autism in safe peer environments.
