The purpose of this reflective essay is to demonstrate an understanding of the differences between argument and assertion. The essay demonstrates the ability to be able to comment on the strengths of argument. Likewise, the essay also demonstrates a recognition of strengths and weaknesses of my own ability and how recognising strengths and weaknesses allows an individual to develop their own lifelong learning ability. The importance of developing lifelong learning is discussed in this assignment. The final purpose of the essay is to demonstrate an understanding of reflection and how reflective practice can support an individual’s own personal and professional learning development. The VARK questionnaire produced this result for myself. Having a multimodal approach allows the learner to adapt to their preferred methods depending on the situation. This can lead to a greater understanding of the subject area. In a study by Samarakoon et al (2013) they discovered that medical students adopted a more kinaesthetic approach in their final years of study. As medical practises and procedures became more advanced in training, students adopted this approach to practise their skills. The authors suggested that using reading and/or aural approaches were not enough to become competent at their skills. Consequently, it could be argued that adopting a kinaesthetic approach from early years of learning can help develop learning of more advanced skills. Using a kinaesthetic approach may have weaknesses though. From my own experience, I have learned how to perform a surgical cricothyrotomy. I learned this by using a kinaesthetic approach. However, I did not have enough practise to be fully confident with the technique and have consequently had skills fade. If I had ready access to the equipment then I could practise but applying a kinaesthetic approach requires the use of tools which can be logistically difficult and expensive. Assertion demonstrates the understanding of a subject area but there may be limited recognition of counter arguments and flaws in theories and can present itself more descriptively. Argument allows the individual to think critically whilst using and critiquing evidence whilst assertion may involve unsubstantiated facts. Being able to understand the difference between the two can allow the individual to improve their learning skills by effectively using information provided
