Death to the PowerPoint Most people believe that using a PowerPoint presentation will give for a great performance. On the contrary, I discourage speakers from using this visual aid, because so many things can go wrong. First of all, the electricity might go off, or you may have technical difficulties where the projector might not work. Then your entire presentation is ruined, because it was the sole basis to your speech. Only if you really need to use the PowerPoint is the time when you should use it. Memorizing your entire speech can work against you. On the day of the presentation, nerves might grip you and you may forget all that you have memorized. The only two parts of the speech I recommend that you know is the introduction and the conclusion. It should be easy to do this because these are the two shortest parts of your presentation. Now, even though you are memorizing those two parts, you can still become familiar with your body. I did not say know the body like you know the beginning and ending, but becoming familiar means you are able to have a little eye contact between lines. It is imperative that you ‘force’ a few persons to listen to your speech. You will only need to say it to them one time. They would be able to point out any inconsistencies when you perform it. Sometimes it is easier for someone to see our mistakes than it is for us to see it. Another reason why this is important is because it helps you practice with a real audience. Although it might not be the same size of the one that you will be presenting to, practicing with a small crowd will give you a firsthand feeling of the many eyes that will be looking back at you on the day of.
