As the conch shatters, so does the remains of civilization. The Conch comes to represent civilization and order. Ralph is using the conch as a symbol of authority. “That’s what this shell’s called. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he’s speaking” (Golding 33). At this point in the novel, Golding shows that the conch is going to play an important role. In this quote, Piggy is speaking to Ralph. Piggy is very wise in the novel, but the boys don’t seem to want to believe that they actually need him. Piggy knows how to keep order without losing his innocence, he is wise and knows how to keep order on the island. The conch is going to be used by Ralph and the other boys as a way of keep sanity. It summon the boys together, after the crash separates them. Something so simple, a shell is going to represent something so big on this island; civilization. The first time the conch is blown, it brings everyone together. Ralph hold their first assembly to choose who is going to take control to make sure things get done so that they can be rescued. He becomes a good leader and gets everyone involved by building shelters and making a fire. Throughout the novel the boys stop listening to Ralph, and the conch starts to become less meaningful.…show more content…
The conch is starting to change, suggesting an innocent quality. “Exposure to the air had bleached the yellow and pink to near white, and transparency” (Golding 78). The appearance of the conch is starting to look different, as the order on the island starts to change. Most of the boys are starting lose hope and thinking they may never be rescued from the island, except Ralph.
