The term is used to describe the way farmers grow and process agricultural products. In this practice, farmers don't use conventional methods to control pests and weeds and to fertilize fruits, vegetables, grains, and other organic produce. For example, farmers use natural fertilizers (decayed leaves, manure, etc.) to enrich the soil and plants, and use mulch or crop rotation to manage weeds. Organic farming practices are also designed to reduce pollution and encourage water and soil conservation. When you're in stores, you'll notice that organic products are labeled as 'USDA Organic'. Organic products (fresh and processed) must adhere to the legal requirements of the National Organic Program (NOP), a regulatory program housed within the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service. One of the regulations is that organically grown agricultural products must not contain any prohibited substances detailed in a list made by the NOP. Some substances that are not allowed include antibiotics, artificial growth hormones, genetically engineered proteins and ingredients, high fructose corn syrup, artificial dyes and sweeteners, synthetic pesticide and fertilizers, irradiation, and sewage…show more content…
