Evidence based practices relies on validated research. The nurse uses her knowledge and current best practice in the art of nursing. EBP is a standardize unit of care that improves patient outcomes, containment of healthcare cost and reduces patient risks. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends that by 2020, Ninety percent of nursing clinical decision- making be evidenced based to reduce the variations in care (Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, Gallagher-Ford, & Kaplan, 2012). Evidenced-based practices are developed from research but uses clinical expertise, translates the research data, and implements best evidence into clinical practice. EBP concept is composed of research, and evidenced based theories. It also comprises clinical expertise, such as assessment, and patient preferences and values that leading to a…show more content…
The spirit of inquiry, an ongoing curiosity, should spark new ideas, or question of why we continue to provide care this way. Asking clinical question and framing the question as to patient population intervention, comparison, outcome, and time provides a framework of design. For example, Kangaroo care: who does it affect (mother and infant), is skin to skin better than no skin to skin, does this aid in bonding, and how soon does skin to skin need to take place to form maternal/infant bonding. Searching for research is accomplished using electronic databases asking the clinical questions. The next, step is to question is the research valid, reliable and relevant to the question. Implementing the practice is often governed by clinical institutions. For instance Kangaroo care causes no budgetary constraints and therefore would not hinder the implementation. The outcomes must be evaluated for changes, and if results differ from the research data monitoring would be implemented to discover the variables that change to expected outcome (Melnyk, Fineout-Overholt, Stillwell, & Williamson,
