The purpose of this paper is to show how key concepts discussed in class and from the readings will be integrated into my own ministry. I think that the study of Christian history has much to offer to the praxis of the Church. In modern Christianity, the subject of Christian history is something that is often neglected or if it is addressed it is done mainly during new member enrollment. However, as mentioned in class “Christianity without history and passion is not Christianity” (Hoskin Lecture). I translate this to mean that if we fail to recognize the history of Christianity, then we fail to be Christians. It is important that we understand the past how Christian engaged the world and how they wrestled with understanding God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit. For the purpose of this paper I will segment concepts discussed in class to the specific day it was discussed such as Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 and Day 4.…show more content…
The first concept I found helpful is the understanding of perspective. Perspective is the concept of how one interprets one’s life and the world around him or her. Our environment, family, ideologies, education, political views, and biblical interpretation develop perspective. Therefore, when one approaches Christian history they do so with their perspective. The challenge for us is to understand that we have our perspective before us as we study church history, but our objective is to understand the perspective that comes from Church history. In other words, the value of church history is to allow it to identify its perspective for itself without imposing upon it our interpretation.
