Author J.K. Rowling famously said “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.” Looking back now, my first experience with drugs seemed innocent and insignificant. I was 15 years old the first time I smoked marijuana with my friends. In school, the phrase “marijuana is a gateway drug” was repeated so many times that it no longer held any meaning to me. I carelessly thought “i am too smart to ever be a drug addict” and shrugged it off. Now, at the age of 29, I am proud to say that I have overcome addiction, something that I have struggled with for more than ten years of my life. I am applying at Colorado Christian University with the hopes of achieving an associates degree in Psychology so that I can become an addiction counselor. For me, “rock bottom” consisted of being homeless, a victim of domestic violence, losing custody of my daughter, losing almost every belonging that I had ever owned, and being all alone. Although it has not been easy to go through everything that I have, I have persevered through it all and continue to work as hard as possible to overcome my addiction and live a positive, happy, sober life. Since the day that I decided to change my life and abstain from drugs, I have had to work harder than I ever had in my entire life. I believe that the continued hard work and persistence I put in to overcome my addiction will be a great influence in my academic work and goals at Colorado Christian University. I have set many goals with my life since becoming sober and I know for a fact that every goal will not be achieved without God and hard work. The role of counseling and spirituality in my continued addiction recovery has been a vital one. Spirituality in my recovery necessitated me to turn my life over to the care of God and in return allowed the old me to “die” and a new, sober, follower of Christ was
