The 1980s "Music can change the world because it can change people." (Bono) Music in America dates back to the 1700s and even earlier than that. In 1888 music in America began to revolutionize with the founding of Columbia Records and the invention of vinyl records.(APatt)Then Elvis Presley A.K.A "The King" remodeled the custom in which musicians are treated within civilization, changing his genre and music all together.(APatt) The birth of a few genres occurred in America during the 1900s, The blues transpired in 1912, and also several new genres came about in the 1980s.(APatt) The politics and music ruled the 1980s. Later the pentagon was spending up to $34 million dollars an hour. Due to this in early 1982, the United States economy had entered a recession. (The 1980s: Reaganomics) In November of that year about nine million people were out of a job. Therefore people lost their homes and businesses. First Reagan's plan to end the recession began with cutting of taxes. (Amadeo) Second Reagan cut income taxes from 70% to 28%. Third he dislodged controls on gas, oil, television, phone services, bus service and shipping to oversea countries. Then the bank regulation subsided, and finally slowly the economy began to grow healthy again. Afterwards in 1989, Ronald Reagan had the topmost approval rating of any president since Franklin Roosevelt. In the 1980s music was very important to the era's generation. Michael Jackson, Madonna, and Prince are said to be the largest pop artist of the decade.("Pop Artist") Their videos changed the way in which one takes in music. In addition to that they too influenced the way people dress acted and talk at that time. Moreover the 1980s was the age of the one hit wonders.(One Hit Wonders) One hit wonders were common at that time because of the growing music industry. Besides the emerging artist of the 80s can thank MTV for their fame. (Popular Culture 1980's) Futher MTV put a greater focus on the image of Popstars. Resulting in the artist becoming recognizable mascots for their genre. Thus they defined the decade through fashion, talent, and persona. As a result the paramount influence on music in the 1980s was the invention of MTV (Music Television). During the 1980s, music and politics influenced the history of the decades. One way in which music affected the history of the decades was through Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie. Meanwhile in November 1984, The supergroup Band-Aid recorded the song "Do They Know It's Christmas?"(Fought and Egerton) Bob Geldof and Midge Ure composed the anthem “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” to raise funds for relief in Ethiopia.
