Background Music Television or commonly referred to as MTV launched on August 1st 1981. The first music video to be aired on MTV was “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles’. The first words were spoken by John Lack in which he said “Ladies and gentlemen, rock and roll”, this was followed by MTV’s theme song with an image of the Apollo 11 moon landing with MTV’s logo on the flag. Changing the Music Industry MTV changed the music industry on August 1st, 1981. It gave people the ability to see music performed visually in their own home. This gave the ability for bands that were never heard of to be given the chance to be heard. Economic Influence MTV had economical influence during the 1980’s. One economical influence was advertising. MTV used music videos to get people to go out and buy the music that was being performed. By showing clips of some of the bands songs, it made people that liked their music go out and buy the bands products that they were selling such as CDs, records, clothing, etc. This created and economic boom for the music industry and also MTV. One of MTVs social influences was on fashion. Many of the performers on MTV wore loud fashion pieces. The images displayed on the screen influenced many young adults to start to wear what their favorite band wore. Some of the fashion influences displayed on MTV included Madonna’s lace gloves, Michael Jacksons leather jacket, and MC Hammer’s parachute pants. Some other fashion looks include fluffy and puffy hairstyles, hoop earrings, fluorescent colored clothing, spandex/leggings, and leg warmers. This caused an era of some fashion pieces never seen before. Another social influence was people came together to watch MTV. Many people back in the 1980’s didn’t have cable TV, so many audience members went over to their friend or neighbors house to watch MTV. This brought many people closer
