Have you ever seen a movie without any type of conflict? The answer to that question is no because without conflict there is not a plot. Without a plot there is no store, and without a story there is no movie. Conflict is the most crucial part of any narrative. There are seven main types of conflict that are both used in narrative and films; person vs. self, person vs. person, person vs. nature, person vs. society, person vs. supernatural, person vs. technology, and person vs. fate/God (Nichol p.1). In a narrative there is always a protagonist that wants something, and when something else or someone gets in the way of that goal, whatever it may be, conflict arises (Cascio p.1.1). & Mrs. Smith Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play the roles of John and Jane Smith. John thinks that Jane works on Wall Street and Jane thinks that John runs a successful construction company. However, John and Jane Smith are both secretively assassins working for different firms. The conflict of person vs. self is well noted in this film when both John and Jane fight with their feelings, stating that their entire marriage was fake, had no true meaning and it would not hurt either one to kill the other. They both struggle with the idea of the other being just a cover up for their true identities. Though out the movie they attempt to kill each other. Person is defined as any plot that features a good guy and bad guy, right or wrong, hero and villain (Nichol p.1.3). “Man vs. Man is the most common form of conflict, also known as interpersonal conflict, that lies in a narrative” (Cascio p.1.3). Starting off with The Ugly Truth, Abby ends up having to put up with the new comedy act, Mike Chadway, in order to bring up ratings for her morning television show. Chadway, played by Gerard Butler, is somewhat of a cynical guy who gives somewhat rude and crude dating tips to women. Person vs. person is shown in the film as Abby tries to prove that Mike Chadway is nothing but a male chauvinistic pig and not all men are as perverse as he is. As Abby is fighting with Chadway trying to destroy his first real shot in entertainment. He tells her that he is right about everything and can prove it by her getting into a relationship with her new neighbor, Colin.
