Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, by Jonathan Safran Foer, shows the lives of many people changing over time, bringing attention to the fact that brief moments can permanently alter one's life. Even the presence of another being can dramatically change one's life, similar to how Oskar's life would have been significantly different without his grandparents' presence. This novel provides quintessential examples of how easily one's life can change in a fraction of a second, whether an event or person is responsible. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close shows this cycle in respect to the life of Oskar Schell, Oskar's family, and several the people Oskar meets along the way during his search to discover more specific details of his father's death. For example, having Mr. Black, the speaker of the quote, as a companion with him while searching for the lock provided Oskar with a friend as well as someone to trust. Hearing these words from Mr. Black gives Oskar the impression that Mr. Black is very wise, leading Oskar to invite Mr. Black to be his companion. In the same way that he allowed him to enter his life, he also had to learn to cope with Mr. Black's departure, which he was able to do successfully, unlike his lack of peace regarding the loss of his father. The most relevant application of the quote is seen when applied to Oskar's relationship with his dad, who Oskar admires greatly. When his father died from the terrorist attack of the World Trade Center, Oskar continued to struggle to let go of his father.
