Synopsis of Mary’s Case Mary was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder (GAD) due to her intense worried and nervous behavior on a daily basis (Laureate Education, Inc, 2012). Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a mental disorder in which the client worries excessively about a number of events. These behavior occurs daily and can continue over a period of six or more months, and can diminish the client’s quality of life. GAD can be treated with medications, cognitive behavior therapy, or both (Carroll, 2014). Benzodiazepines has been one of the first medication that was recommended for clients with GAD (Carroll,2014).This type of medication helps the physical and mental relaxation level by accumulating the GABA within the client’s brain. Benzodiazepines is also known as an antipsychotic medications which is effective in treating GAD, but their usage must be monitor at all times (Mahableshwarkar, Jacobsen, Serenko & Chen, 2014). With the use of cognitive therapy, the strategies can be used to help Mary to examine the root cause of the anxiety level and further helps to develop a coping mechanism to deal with the fears (Wolitzky-Taylor, Arch, Rosenfield, & Craske, 2012). Preston et al., (2013) said that, the only differences of GAD and panic attacks is the duration and the intensity. This is vital information to be knowledgeable of in developing the treatment plan. Other factors would be the severity of the diagnosis, and the client functioning level before the onset of the present symptoms. I also believe that family support should be considered. Justification of treatment for GAD Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is one of the most common and chronic disorders which can be associated to other health issues. This awareness should help the counselor to develop a well-rounded treatment plan to benefit the client. The most effective treatment that researchers have identify to treat GAD is both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology approaches. Medications is used depending on the severity of the symptoms, while psychotherapy is used to help balance the behaviors that surrounds the anxiety (HoertelLe, Strat, Blanco, Lavaud and Dubertret, 2012). Hoertelle et al., (2012) further reports that, both pharmacology and psychotherapy efficacy has been proven to work with clients suffering from anxiety
