Hrothgar is a good king because he is selfless, compassionate, and interconnected. While Hrothgar is king, he worries more about the wellbeing of his people than about himself. After battle, Hrothgar rewarded his soldiers for a well-done job. He then “opened out his treasure-full hands”(the coming of Grendel) and rewarded them with the treasures he had acquired from battle. Not only is he selfless, Hrothgar is also caring. Hrothgar built a hall for everyone to celebrate in after his victories and even his losses. Even during battle, he would leave “the common pastures untouched ... taking no lives” (the coming of Grendel) because he cared about the innocent people.
