How Does Climate Affect Climate Change

1. INTRODUCTION Agricultural systems are managed ecosystems. Climate is the primary determinant of agricultural productivity. Plant systems, and hence crop yields, are influenced by many environmental factors, and these factors, such as moisture and temperature may act either synergistically or antagonistically with other factors in determining yields (Waggoner 1983). Global climate change, considered to be the most serious threat to the environment, has been the centre of debate among the global scientific community in the recent years. Climate changes which affect agriculture are: (1) changes in land use and land cover, (2) worldwide decline in biodiversity, (3) changes in atmospheric composition of gases, and (4) change in climate (Uprety et al., 2007). The concern over the possible consequences of increasing concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), largely as a result of the cumulative effects of emissions from fossil fuel combustion, land clearing, and the response of the oceans and biosphere to this anthropogenic perturbation, has created renewed interest in developing full understanding of the ecosystem responses to increased levels of CO2.…show more content…
The effects of increased temperature and moisture stress have been proved to produce negative results for yield and quality but relatively little is known about the effects of increased levels of CO2 on seed yield, oil content and fatty acid composition of mustard. Although there are some indications that increasing CO2 levels may partially reverse the negative effects of high temperature and drought, an understanding of the combined impacts from increased CO2, varying nitrogen levels and water regimes is crucial for the development of adaptation strategy to climate change. Hence, keeping in view the above facts, the present investigation
