I am currently a student attending Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, California. Living in California, I have witnessed, the negative impacts of climate change. We have been in a drought for the last four years, seen wildfires get stronger, and now have to dramatically reduce the intake of water. We can no longer continue to ignore that climate control is an important factor that affects the entire planet. I have admired your efforts to address the negative effects of climate change on our planet. It was calming to hear you declare that “we will respond to the threat of climate change” in your Second Inaugural Address. Thesis: Climate change is one of the most significant problems facing our planet. Currently, our environment is facing the consequences of climate change. According to the American Psychological Association, climate change will likely increase in post-traumatic stress disorder, because of rise in number and severity of natural disasters. It is unfortunate to see many people struggle to cope with the disasters they face. These folks do not only have to live through the disaster, but also struggle to rebuild their families, memories, and homes. Not only does climate change affect individuals psychologically, but also some people’s lives. The natural disasters that have occurred have claimed many lives. According to Lindsey Cook and Ethan Rosenberg’s “No One Knows How Many People Died in Katrina”, the lowball estimate of fatalities is 1,833 people, however no one really knows the exact number, which is most “likely even more deadly.” Many do not know if their loved ones are still alive.
