The narrator, who defensively claims he’s sane throughout the story, impulsively kills and stuffs a man under his floorboards. Not surprisingly, as an unstable killer, he tries to justify his actions to a seemingly unsympathetic audience, at least I’m not convinced. Right from the beginning he proclaims he is "not mad", and that he had good reason for what he did. For me at least, this gives off a red flag that there’s something off when someone feels the need to immediately cover something dark from their past, as the narrator is doing. As he recounts this disturbing crime, the beating heart of the dead old man starts only after the crime has been committed, and significantly intensifies the more he tries to confidently deny his crime.
