It has become very important now days to acquire education in order to be successful and get a good job. It is because of this that healthcare is the prime field to be in. There are many different career paths to choose from in the health field, but one which caught my eye is the Health Information Management. Health Information Management also known as HIM is the “practice of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care” (HIC). With, a HIM degree a person can go as far as obtaining a certificate, license, or PHD. The requirements for RHIA are very easy and anyone who is in the field of HIM wanting to get the certificate can get it. They should magnificently ample the academic requirements at a bachelor’s level in HIM profession from a CAHIMA known as Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. They can also graduate from the Health Information Program, which is approved by the AHIMA. The qualifications of academic requirements will be verified for each person wanting to take the exam prior to the test. First time candidates must also submit their official transcript of their college or university that they have attended. “AHIMA and the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) permit a graduate of a program in HIM at the associate or baccalaureate degree level to apply to write the appropriate certification examination consistent with the academic level achieved and given independently by two associations. The graduate must meet the educational competencies for certification as a technician or administrator established by the association to which the application is made” (AHIMA). The AHIMA has created a new opportunity for people wanting to take their exam before they graduate it. The RHIA holds unique capabilities such as maintaining patient’s information which is a strategic asset for health organization. They manage paper and computer-based health records and they comply with the joint commission, state, and federal laws. They accurately do coding for reimbursement and help improve the quality of patient data. According to Payscale.com, it is estimated that RHIAs make from $38,500 to $80,712. Having a RHIA shows that the credentials is qualified with a minimum of at least a bachelor’s degree. Since RHIA is not required, “successfully completing the RHIA exam and receiving the credential demonstrates a high level of professionalism within the health care industry” (Ehow). It shows that a person committing to complete the RHIA is committed to the Health Information Management industry. These individuals are perceived as professionals in the HIM field; also people who have credentials tend to have more knowledge and experience in the health information management, area then people who don’t have the credentials. They are required to continue to learn and study and maintain their credentials so they are mostly up to date on current events and trends in the healthcare field. It also affects the pay scale because people who have RHIA tend to make more money than non-credentials. The RHIA now has become common in the HIM industry so
