Going to prison is something that most people do not want to ever have to go through in their lives. People get their fix of the prison life through various film and television shows such as, Orange is the New Black, Shawshank Redemption, and Escape from Alcatraz. Few people stop to think if the stories they are watching are actually accurate in accordance to real prison life. The media has been known to stretch the truth and misinform the masses. Prison life is not something to be glorified or made to seem not as bad as it actually is, the truth of the matter is that no one should ever want to be sent there. The purpose of prisons is to act as a deterrent and prevent people from wanting to commit crimes. Does the media accurately portray prisons? Is the sole purpose of the media to entertain the masses? Unfortunately it is a common occurrence, Kari Huus States in her article Nearly 10 percent of inmates suffer sexual abuse “Nearly one in 10 prisoners suffer sexual abuse while incarcerated in state prisons, local jails and post-release treatment facilities” (Huus). Rape and sexual abuse are the acts of sexual contact or sexual acts that are not consensual. Surprisingly enough most of the unwanted sexual advances were by prison guards or prison staff. Liz Fields states in her article Half of Sexual Abuse Claims in American Prisons Involve Guards “49 percent of the unwanted sexual misconduct or harassment involved prison staff as perpetrators, in acts ranging from verbal sexual harassment to the most serious non consensual sexual penetration” (Fields). Prisoners not only have to fear being sexually assaulted by other inmates, but also live in fear of being sexually assaulted by prison
