Taylor Clements Professor Rapone English 112L 15 September 2015 Don’t Bite the Hand That Feeds You One of the most important characters in the story Godfather Death is the doctor. He was born into a family of twelve children. His father didn’t know how he could take care of him so he went out to find a godfather. The father named Death the child’s godfather because he didn’t discriminate whether people were rich or poor. Death promised the father that he would make his son rich and famous. He kept his promise and made his godson into a rich and famous doctor. Even after being warned several times, the doctor went against Death by doing exactly what he said not to do. The doctor comes into conflict when the king becomes ill. Death stands at the king’s feet which means that it is his time to die. The doctor wanted to save the king because it was the right thing to do. He knows that death will be angry but he saves the king out of kindness anyways. The doctor also takes advantage of death. He thinks that because they are family that Death will overlook it. The doctor says “If I cheat Death this one time, he will be angry, but since I am his godson, he will turn a blind eye, so I will risk it” (Grimm 14). The doctor was right. Death said “You have hoodwinked me this time, and I will forgive you once because you are my godson. But if you try such a thing again, it will be your neck, and I will take you away with me” (Grimm 14). Later on the king’s daughter becomes ill and Death stands at her feet. The King announces that whoever saves his daughter will marry her and inherit the crown. At this point the doctor become greedy. In the story it says “he should have remembered his godfather’s warning, but the princess’s great beauty and the happy prospect of becoming her husband so infatuated him that he flung all caution to the wind” (Grimm 14). Death takes the child in and promises to make him rich and famous. Death follows through with his promise to make the child a famous doctor. Then Death gives his godchild an herb to heal his patients and tells him how he is supposed to use it. He also says “Beware of using the herb against my will, or it will turn out badly for you” (Grimm 14). The doctor turns on Death several times expecting Death to forgive him. Death forgives him one time but he won’t the next time. The doctor doesn’t take Death’s warning seriously because he turns against him again for love and fortune. Death is now angry at the ungratefulness of his godson and says “It’s all over for you. Now it’s your turn” (Grimm 14). Death takes him to an underground cave and shows the doctor his candle that is about to burn out. The doctor begs Death to prolong his life. Death is tired of the doctor being ungrateful for the life that Death has given him. Death puts the candle out and the doctor
