A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is a type of motor controller that drives an electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the electric motor. VFD’s can also be known Adjustable Frequency Drives (AFD) or Variable Voltage Variable Frequency Drives (VVVFD). Advantages of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD): 1. Reduce Energy Consumption and Energy Costs 2. Extend Equipment Life and Reduce Maintenance 3. Problems Caused by Full-Voltage Starters 4. Control the Speed of the Motor Disadvantages of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD): Upfront cost of a VFD can be relatively high depending on how large your system is. • Adding a VFD device may lead to a system resonance at certain speeds, leading to (Harmonics) o Dramatically increased noise o Excessive vibration. • VFD device have been known to shorten the life. • Can reduce the service factor on the motor it’s used on. How does a Variable Frequency Drive work? The first stage of a Variable Frequency AC Drive, or VFD, is the Converter. The converter is comprised of six diodes, which are similar to check valves used in plumbing systems. They allow current to flow in only one direction; the direction shown by the arrow in the diode…show more content…
With this filter, the voltage and current waveform applied to the motor are nearly sinusoidal. • The LC filter reduces the harmonic content of the output voltage. Therefore, standard motors can be used at their nominal ratings. • As a standard the ACS 1000 has a grounded low pass LC sine filter at its output stage. The low pass frequency is designed to be well below the lowest switching frequency used by the inverter output stage. • This greatly enhances the purity of both the voltage and current waveforms applied to the motor. Conclusion: Knowledge gained from completion of Internship: • Characteristic of ACS1000 family • Main circuit diagram • Function of Components (Rectifier, DC-Link, Inverter) • Function of Output Sine Filter • Function of Common Mode Choke • Location of main components in air cooled version And most importantly the advantage of using VFD instead of mechanical turbines for operating compressors, pumps, and other induction motor applications. It provides better efficiency in terms of power and production. And is capable of stabilizing the system with better accuracy and
