As the population ages, falls become an increased risk among the elderly. Problems associated with vision, stiffening joints, poor balance, reduced sensation, weakening muscles, incontinence and chronic diseases can increase the chance of falls. Falls can cause traumatic injuries resulting in lacerations, skin tears, head traumas, fractures, other severe injuries and even death. In order to prevent and reduce the risk of falls, certain precautions such as continence management and exercise may be proven to be effective. Incontinence in aged care can lead to falls in various situations. This may include slipping on wet surfaces while rushing to the toilet; symptoms of a urinary tract infection that may affect the individual to fall, such as urinary frequency; and nocturia, combined with limited vision and poor balance, along with postural hypotension from medication. Mobility problems and poor balance affect the individuals ability to be independent, increasing the risk of falls. Balance, co-ordination, muscle strength, endurance and gait should be targeted for exercise interventions to prevent falls. As the elderly are extremely frail, it is important to consider the choice of exercise. Yoga and tai chi are two forms of exercise that is beneficial in improving balance and mobility. Tai chi is a low intensity exercise that allows the individual to breathe deeply, use mental imagery and perform slow, graceful movements to promote balance and flexibility. Yoga however, focuses on holding specific positions, performing breathing techniques, and meditation, providing positive effects on muscle strength, balance, flexibility, endurance and gait.
