Dominick Provenzano Reference groups are groups that help us understand or make sense of our position in society relative to other groups. Basically, it is a group of individuals that can offer you a comparison to yourself in some way. Everyone compares themselves to a reference group at some point in their life, whether they realize it or not. Two examples of times I have compared myself to a reference group include going to a Catholic school and being in the working class as opposed to being on welfare. A reference group I have compared myself to in the past was public school students. From first grade until when I graduated in 2012, I attended Catholic school.
