Background and related literature Many ancient civilizations that flourished have one thing in common -- river. During times of floods, rivers create deltas that were rich in soil and gravel that can be used for farming and construction. Moreover, the river systems were used for commerce, trade, and travel. This created the concept of dock and market where goods were imported and exported and where galleons and merchant vessels arrived to pick-up commodities and people for travel. In the Philippines, the concept of market, though started long before the arrival of the Chinese, flourished in sea and river shores.
