Harmful Effects of Date Rape Date rape, as with any traumatic experience, has a wide array of harmful effects. These effects tend to be manifested physically, psychologically, and socially. And normally these not only affects the victim but also the surrounding family and close friends. This essay then seeks to explain what date rape is, its harmful effects and what precautions and solutions are available to the victim and those affected. Date rape, like any other form of sexual assault is a serious matter. On a macro level it diminishes female confidence in men and on a more micro level it, in essence, destroys the victim of that act. But before addressing the matter at hand, let’s first seek to define what rape is. Rape is sex you don’t agree to, on a more academic scale, rape is then defined as being subjected to unwanted sexual intercourse, oral, anal, or other sexual contact antecedent to the use of menacing verbal pressure or misuse of authority. The culprit usually is someone familiar, be it someone they’ve recently met or in extreme cases, be someone they’ve been dating. The culprits don’t believe they’ve done anything wrong. Normally, seeing as the victim know the assailant to some degree, date rape, as the name itself suggests, takes place at parties, campuses, and/or at functions (social gatherings). This typically includes situations where alcohol and drugs are involved, unsupervised parties or being on a date with someone that the victim has just met. According to the RAPE, ABUSE & INCEST NATIONAL NETWORK (RAINN), 44 % of victims are under the age of 18 and 80 % are under the age of 30.
