The American Civil war lasted for 4 years, during those agonizing years many battles were fought throughout the war; from Bull Run to The Battle of Boonville all the way to Gettysburg. There has been a debate of what was the worst battle during the war and why? Gettysburg has been declared the most gruesome of the wars because of the amount of people that perished, Pickett’s Charge was the worst decision that Lee made as general and the Victory of the North. General Robert E. Lee moves his army of at least sixty thousand men into Union Territory while most of the battles of the American Civil War had been fought in the South Lee decided that the moment was right to invade Union soil. This was General Lee's attempt to give everything he had to beat the union. His main goal was to end the war and with that he wanted the South to be its own country, and was looking for a settlement favorable to the south. General Longstreet suggest to Lee to move around Cemetery Ridge and threaten Washington Dc to get Union off the high ground. Longstreet realizes that their outnumbered and dont have the high ground. Lee believed that his men had already lost too much to turn back now so he gives the order to charge to general to George Pickett. Longstreet never gave the order to attack. On a hot July summer day the Confederate army marched “to their death” over a mile long. “The Confederate masses, moving along with parade-like precision, immediately fell under concentrated Union artillery fire and suffered heavily” (Fredriksen, “George E. Pickett”). Since general Lee had his men so well trained they never second guessed his order, they always thought his decisions were the best for everyone. The Confederate army didn't lose because of his men lack of courage; they lost because Lee's men were too confident in Lee.
