There are a number of major issues that incited the American Civil War which had lasted for four years, from 1861 to 1865. The factors are the role of the federal government; arguments on states’ and federal rights; the preservation the Union; the economic and social differences between the North and the South, but these factors were all inevitably correlated to slavery in which it was significantly responsible for the outbreak of Civil War. Most professional historians nowadays agree with the speeches of Alexander H. Stephens, Vice President of the Confederates States of America in March 1861. Because the South was the region of small towns with large plantations, they mostly relied on slave labour as well as imported cheap European workforce. Hence, with the using of manual labour, crops such as cotton, rice, tobacco, indigo, and forest products were greatly produced. This shows that the exported crops were the main support to the states’ economic strength and prosperity. It is also certain that slavery was part of their way of life considering that most of the Southerners’ wealth came from the plantation which depended on the main labour…show more content…
This also shows that a state had so much power that it beyond the federal government’s control. We also can see that the main problem for the outbreak of the dispute was whether the states that were just recently created that joined the Union would be allowed or disallowed to practice slavery. Clearly the long-standing dispute between the Northerners and the Southerners was heavily influenced and primarily caused by the concern of the future of this factor: slavery. Thus, the attack on Fort Sumter in April 1861 ignited the outbreak of American Civil War. However, not all Confederate soldiers (the Southerners’ side) fought to preserve the slavery system and the Union soldiers (the Northerners’ side) fought to end it.
