The Civil War lasted for four years, from 1861-1865. It was between the American people; primarily the northern states vs. the southern states. The South was called the Confederate States of America and was led by President Jefferson Davis. The North was still known as the Union, they were led by president Abraham Lincoln. If one were to ask the average person the causes of the War Between the States, that person would most likely answer with one word: Slavery. A more accepted term used by those who were pro slavery was [peculiar Institution], which in reality meant the same thing as slavery. A there were still battles during the civil that left an ill feeling in the mouth of the confederates. [The Battle of Vicksburg] was the final major military action in the Civil War where confederates were besieged for nearly seven weeks until surrendering. Not only did battles like that scar the nation on both sides but after the was the ex-slaves were still treated unfairly. [Black Codes] were laws passed by Southern states in 1865 and 1866, after the Civil War. These codes were very similar to the [Jim Crow Laws] these laws were made to suppress the rights of these newly free men. Some of the laws were, but not limited to: No negro shall be permitted to rent or keep a house, No negro shall be permitted to preach, and No negro who is not in the military service shall be allowed to carry fire-arms, or any kind of weapons and these were only some of the many unfair laws. The southern white men who were not happy about the civil war even started their own gang to terrorize the black people called the [KKK] this stood for Ku Klux Klan which aimed to suppress the newly acquired powers of black. [Reconstruction] was the named of the period after the civil war which brought he confederate states back into the United States of America, the attempt at reconstructing this country was a failed one because 154 years later there is still racism, prejudice, and groups like the KKK
