Slavery was a very crucial time for people that lived in that realm and in the novel Kindred it goes more into depth of how devastating the life of a slave was. There are many issues that were presented in Kindred, but gender roles and race had a great impact on people those days. Some people saw it unacceptable to play in those roles as a slave, but there were many people that sometimes didn’t see themselves as slaves, but as regular individuals doing their jobs. Although, slavery happened a while ago it seems like history keeps repeating itself because gender roles and race seem to still be shaping how people think and its still an issue that isn’t being fixed. Gender had a great impact on slaves because it shaped slaves to believe that men’s roles were to work strenuous jobs and woman’s roles were to work household jobs and to maintain the white owner pleased. Things have not changed much, men can get almost any job they want to get and women can’t because men and women are still unequal today. Women these days are still looked as people that are supposed to rear children and work at the same time, and nothing has changed for them. They aren’t given equal opportunities in the work environment like men do, and women still get paid less than men for doing almost the same jobs. This suppresses women from succeeding because they feel like they are not in a level playing field. Race also affects people these days because most white privileged people get better education and have higher chances of being accepted to the best schools in the country, and while Blacks and Hispanics get a low standard education and are less likely to get accepted into the best schools in the country. These are problems that relate to the slavery days because slaves weren’t being given a chance to be set free and thrive in this
